"Hidden Gold"Does the way a company's employees use their benefits affect the cost of coverage? It certainly does! Here's what a Philadelphia-based nonprofit found out after GBS was called in to survey its employees about their benefits. The Maternity Care Coalition, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization, had grown extensively over several years. During the growth period, there were numerous changes, both among the staff and to the organization itself. As a result, no one had performed an audit of the employee benefits for quite some time. A concerned board member asked GBS to provide them with a professional review. With the employer's goal of saving money and increasing employee satisfaction in mind, GBS surveyed the employees regarding their attitudes toward their benefits and how they were actually using them. We found out that many of the benefits were either underutilized or inadequately meeting existing needs. As a result, considerable expense was going toward items the employees found of little value and weren't using. With that knowledge, GBS was able to restructure the benefits package so that it better matched actual employee use. We also implemented virtual HR to make it easier for employees to access and update their benefits as their circumstances changed. GBS did such a good job that the organization engaged us to handle their entire benefits program. The final result? Employees received enhance benefits coverage, including dental and prescription coverage that truly made sense. The employer saved significant money. And by utilizing GBS as their HR "back office," the organization was able to free up valuable personnel to attend to their primary mission - meeting the needs of women and children in the Delaware Valley.
