Group Life and Disability
Adding fringe benefits like group life and disability insurance to your package will help you attract and retain employees.
Group Life Insurance provides a benefit in the event of an unexpected death. An accidental death & dismemberment benefit is usually included that pays an additional benefit if the insured suffers loss of life, limb, or eyesight as a result of an accident.
Group Disability Insurance provides a percentage of your income in the event of a disabling accident or illness. There are two types of group disability insurance:
- Short-term disability insurance provides a benefit if you are unable to work for a short period of time. A typical policy would provide you from 50% to 67% of your pre-disability salary for up to six months.
- Long-term disability insurance provides protection if you are unable to work for longer periods of time. Usually after six months of a disability or when your short-term disability payments stop, benefits from about 50% to 70% of your pre-disability salary will be paid on a monthly basis until you reach age 65 or social security retirement age or until you return to work.
